Let’s talk about blood! Blood is a vital fluid that circulates throughout our entire body bringing nutrients and oxygen to our tissues and removing toxins and waste form tissues. Blood is made in the bone marrow and consists of three components known as red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC) and Platelets. RBC, WBC and Platelets are all suspended in a liquid called plasma. All have important roles but today we are going to focus on platelets.

Platelets are cells that are known for their clotting abilities and also aid in wound healing. They contain growth factors that can trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration or healing at the location of treatment.

While PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is not FDA approved for aesthetic use (face and hair rejuvenation) it is widely accepted and performed in aesthetics. We use devices that are FDA approved for joint injections because it is giving you back the highest quality of your PRP that is available to you.

Platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) treatments come from your own body, so there is little risk of negative reactions. Your blood is drawn in office and processed so that only the desired enriched cells remain (PRP). PRP contains growth factors that can help restore damaged skin and more.

To obtain platelet rich plasma your provider will draw your blood (just like what happens when you see your doctor and they order labs) and take 1-2 tubes of your blood which at this time is considered “whole blood”.

After your blood is collected we will then spin it in a device called a centrifuge. When the blood spins in a centrifuge your RBC, platelets and plasma separate providing your provider with the ability to treat you specifically with platelet rich plasma and not with RBC that essentially provide no aesthetic benefit and can cause pain during the injections. PRP that is contaminated with RBC or WBC which can have inflammatory and catabolic effects causing the opposite effect of desired outcome.

Now you are ready for your PRP aesthetic treatment. Typically there are multiple injections depending on your concern (hair regeneration or anti-aging facial treatment).

Sometimes it is also used topically when undergoing a micro needling procedure. No matter which modality the benefits of platelets can be plentiful.

Autologous therapy is a therapeutic treatment that uses a person’s own cells or tissue (for our purposes blood) that are processed outside of the body and then reintroduced to the same person.
